How to take your measurements correctly

Accurate measurements are the key to perfectly fitting garments. Learn how to measure yourself correctly to choose the right pattern size every time.

Accurate body measurements are the single most important step for achieving a perfect fit. Even the best pattern and most beautiful fabric won’t produce a flattering garment if your measurements are off.

What You Need

A flexible measuring tape, a helper (self-measuring is possible but trickier), a notepad, and fitted clothing or just your undergarments.

Key Measurements

Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape parallel to the floor.
Waist: Measure your natural waist — the narrowest part of your torso, usually 1-2 inches above your navel.
Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips, usually 7-9 inches below your waist.
Inseam: Measure from your crotch to your ankle bone along the inside of your leg.

Tips for Accuracy

Don’t pull the tape too tight or leave it too loose — it should lie flat against your body without pulling. Always measure in your underwear or a thin fitted base layer. Record measurements in both inches and centimetres.
